Department of
Physics and Material Science, TIET

Creating the foundation and strengthening the base of every technology

Physics is about the curiosity to explore how and why the objects around us behave the way they do. Discoveries in physics have been fundamental to the numerous technological advances we enjoy today. They are shaping our future. Physics is both exciting and challenging. If you are inquiring and playful, this is the field you should study. The rewards include the satisfaction of better understanding of the objects - both living and lifeless - around us and the development of various skills that only a few people possess. Employers are just looking for such human resources.

Confluence of Theoretical and Experimental Science

The faculty members affiliated to the Department of Physics and Materials Science have expertise in theoretical nuclear science, particle physics, computational physics, nonlinear dynamics as well as experimental materials science, nano-medicine, magnetism, functional nanostructures, photovoltaics and experimental nuclear physics. Department houses cutting-edge experimental and high performance computational facilities. Faculty members have a synergetic approach towards their academic and research endeavors. Department has an established reputation of delivering interdisciplinary technology with strong theoretical back up.

Experiential Learning

Experimental work forms an important aspect of learning. The Department provides training in problem solving, instrumentation and measurement techniques as well analysis. We also ensure that all the students are exposed to the world of measurements at an early stage. Most of the courses have a lab component and practical work is compulsory for all programs. Students spend a large chunk of their learning time in hands-on experiments. The Department has well-maintained teaching laboratories those cater to the curiosity of the students. All PG students get involved in research. Even the UG students are given formal as well as informal exposure of research based learning.

Mission

  • Develop manpower that will contribute to academic, scientific, and industrial development of the country.
  • Carryout fundamental and applied research in interdisciplinary areas.
  • Design and develop advanced materials for technological applications.

Vision

To develop our academic and research programs as per the national needs competitive with global development.

Message from Head of the Department

Dr. Kulvir Singh

The SPMS from its modest beginning in 1960s has now evolved into one of the most vibrant and dynamic academic units of Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology. Today it stands as one of the leading schools in the country, well-known for its excellence in teaching and research. Sustaining the achieved success in the academic and research pursuits has been the driving force among the faculty, students and the support staff. The SPMS is the proud recipient of the DST-FIST grant, both stages - I & II. SPMS has been regularly awarded R&D projects from the leading national funding agencies, e.g., DST, SERB, UGC, CSIR, AICTE, DAE, DRDO, BRNS, MeitY, MHRD. The scholars of the school have bagged prestigious award and fellowships that includes Fulbright fellowship, Commonwealth fellowship, Kothari fellowship, Visvesvaraya Young Faculty Research fellowship etc. The school has dedicated research labs on diverse field of physical science and interdisciplinary topics. The school is not only trying to unveil fundamental mechanism of physical science but also providing local solutions of global problems. For example, scholars of SPMS have developed glass and bio ceramics from stubble, while stubble burning causes huge pollution during post harvesting season. Metal foam for armor, thin film for solar cell, membrane for water purification, electromagnetic wave shielding; the list of achievements of the SPMS are long. The alumni of the schools are established in diverse fields, mainly, research and teaching in leading institutes of India and abroad.

Excellence-oriented Academic Programmes

The School offers pragrams at Bachelor's (BSc), Master's (MSc) and Doctoral (PhD) levels. The Bachelor's program (BSc with Physics major) is conducted in conjuction with the Thapar School of Liberal Arts and Sciences (TSLAS). Each of the programs is designed and developed with the aim of supporting students in their endeavors to pursue higher studies and explore job opportunities in related industries. Research based learning has been the theme of our programs.
